Semi-Permanent Hair Dye

Find the colour you want

  • There are many popular brands and hundreds of different colours to choose from.
  • Pick the colour that’s your favourite.
  • Semi-Permanent Hair Dyes work on all hair colours, but show up brightest on light hair.

Bleach your hair if necessary

  • Bleaching hair will make the colour turn out brighter on all hair types.
  • If you want intense, bright colours and you have darker hair you will need to bleach it. Just keep in mind that bleaching may damage your hair.

Perform a patch test
A patch test is an easy way to check for allergens at home. This step is very important, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Do a strand test

  • Select a small strand of hair.
  • Dye this strand following the instructions on the bottle.

Wash your hair with clarifying shampoo and blow dry it completely
Normally you should avoid using a blow dryer, as it can dry out and damage your hair. However, the drier your hair the better your dye will soak in. Don’t condition your hair until after the dye has been applied and rinsed out.

Protect your skin and clothes

  • Wear clothes that you don't mind staining
  • Put a towel down on the floor in the area where you’re transforming
  • Wear gloves, to protect your hands
  • Place a thin layer of petroleum jelly on the skin along your hairline

Figure out colour placement
You can dye all of your hair the same shade or you can get more creative. Here are a few options to consider:

  • Dye only your highlights
  • Dye just the ends
  • Two colours from the same brand can be mixed
  • Try a wild, multicoloured look or make a pattern

Apply the Hair Dye
Place a thick amount of hair dye wherever you want it. The best way to do this varies based on your style.

Let the dye set
How long you should leave it in for will vary by brand, but 30 minutes to an hour is typical. Unlike permanent dyes, which contain harsh chemicals that can damage your hair and skin, there is usually no "too long" with semi-permanent colours.

Rinse out the dye

  • Soak your hair thoroughly with running water.
  • Gently wash your hair with colour care shampoo.
  • Keep rinsing your hair until the water starts running clear.
  • Apply conditioner.
  • Allow your hair to air dry.

Minimise Hair Washing
Semi-Permanent Dye will fade more each time you wash your hair. To make the colour last longer, wash your hair as infrequently as you can get away with.

Use Colour-Protecting Shampoo
When you do wash your hair, be sure to use a shampoo that will minimise fade.

Keep your hair moisturised
Dry hair is more prone to fading. Use conditioner, whether rinse-out or leave-in.

Repeat dyeing as needed
The nature of Semi-Permanent Hair Colour is that it doesn’t last forever.

Before you start
Wear clothes that you don’t mind staining.

Sectioning your hair
Divide your hair into four sections and clip into place.

Apply Barrier Cream

  • Ensure you apply this to your forehead, ears and neck.
  • This keeps the colour off your skin.
  • Be careful to keep the cream off your hair.

Protect your skin
Wash the barrier cream off your hands. Slip on your first pair of gloves.

Apply the Hair Dye

  • Squeeze half the colour into a non-metallic bowl.
  • Open the Activator Bottle and squeeze half the contents into the bowl.
  • Use an applicator brush to blend the contents of the bowl into a thick cream, like conditioner.
  • Unclip one section of hair and apply a small amount of colour to your roots.
  • Make sure you only colour new hair that has not been colour-treated before!
  • Space the colour in rows about ¼ inch apart.
  • Continue colouring the roots in your remaining sections of hair.

Let the dye set

  • Use a cleansing wipe to clean up any colour that dripped onto your skin.
  • Set a timer for 35 minutes and relax. You did it!

Rinse out the dye

  • Rinse your hair until the water runs clear.
  • Then massage gently while rinsing to help lift excess colour off hair and scalp.
  • Wash your hair and lock in colour with Nourishing Colour Enhancing Shampoo and Conditioner.
